  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 0.75 pound mozzarella cheese, sliced
  • 0.75 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 1.5 teaspoons dried basil leaves
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt, divided, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 0.5 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a Dutch oven over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion and garlic until cooked through.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes and seasonings; let simmer for 1.5 hours.
  3. Cook lasagna noodles according to package instructions; drain and rinse.
  4. Mix ricotta cheese with egg and remaining parsley.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Assemble layers: spread meat sauce, add noodles, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella; repeat layers.
  6. Top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan; cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Remove foil and bake an additional 25 minutes until bubbly.
